Gympie East State School opened on October 9 1965 after several smaller schools were closed in the area. The decision to bus students into a central location gave rise to the school as it is today. The history and ethos of these smaller schools is not lost in our small rural school today.
Situated approx 9 km from the centre of Gympie on the way to Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach and the world heritage Fraser Island, our school provides co-educational education from Prep to Year 7 for 145 students (Feb 2005). This rural setting with rolling hills, dairy cattle, small crops and flowing creeks is a great backdrop for this environmentally conscious school.
Our School Curriculum Plan provides a focus for class levels on a number of Unit Themes relating to the environment, space, culture and change. These themes are translated into learning opportunities for groups P – 2, Yrs 3 – 5, and Yrs 5 – 7, where students are challenged and exposed to relevant and meaningful learning opportunities. Twice a year we report to parents of all students in literacy, numeracy and integrated unit studies. These integrated unit studies relate to Science, Social Studies, Technology and the Arts. Specific reporting is conducted twice a year as well on Music, Lote (German), Technology Skills and Health and Physical Education. This provides a comprehensive picture of student strengths and areas for improvement over time.
As can be seen from our website, each year level is involved in a variety of school and locally- based environmental activities. Students are also able to participate in a healthy sports program both at school and in the local district. Students have the opportunity to participate and excel at a school, district, regional and state level in a variety of sports.
Cultural opportunities are catered for in instrumental music (band), singing (choir), drama (Arts Council) and public speaking and debating. A highlight is our student involvement in The Bush Poets Breakfast at the Gympie Music Muster each August and the Bush Poet in Residence Progam that involves some of the best in the business. Names like Marco Gliori, Milton Taylor, Noel Stallard and the late and great Bobby Miller.
Our school motto of "Nothing Without Endeavour" motivates us to continue to strive for excellence in providing quality educational opportunities for all.
